The Art of Slowing Down: The Story of Turkish Towels
The Art of Slowing Down
What Centuries-Old Bathing Rituals Can Teach Us About Slowing Down
When did resting become something we feel guilty about?
Our days are filled with movement. We work, scroll, answer messages, make plans, and think about what comes next. Even when we finally have a quiet moment, many of us automatically reach for our phones.
But for centuries, bathing traditions offered something different: a reason to stop.
More Than a Bath
In Ottoman culture, the hammam was not simply a place to wash.
Hammams were important social spaces, places where people gathered, spent time together, and moved through a bathing ritual rather than rushing through a shower before starting the next task.
Textiles were part of that experience.
Historical sources describe the peştamal, a bath wrapper used in Ottoman hammams, alongside towels used to dry the body. Surviving Ottoman towels could be beautifully decorated, with elaborate examples embroidered in silk and even metal-wrapped threads.
These weren't simply forgotten objects sitting in the corner of a bathroom. They belonged to a larger ritual.
From the Hammam to the Modern Home
Today, the Turkish towel has travelled far beyond the hammam.
Its lightweight construction makes it remarkably versatile: something that can move from the bathroom to the beach, pool, spa, suitcase, or simply a quiet corner at home.
But perhaps the most interesting thing it can carry into modern life isn't only its practicality.
It's the idea of ritual.
A warm shower.
Wrapping yourself in a beautiful textile.
Making tea or coffee.
Sitting quietly for a few minutes.
Having dinner with people you care about.
Taking a walk without rushing to the next destination.
None of these moments needs to be extraordinary.
Maybe that's precisely the point.
Slowing Down Doesn't Mean Doing Nothing
Slowing down doesn't require escaping your responsibilities or completely changing your life.
Sometimes it simply means being fully present for something you're already doing.
Eating without scrolling.
Talking without checking the time.
Walking and actually noticing where you are.
Taking an ordinary shower and allowing it to become ten quiet minutes in your day.
The objects around us can become part of these small rituals—not because an object creates wellbeing by itself, but because the things we choose to live with can remind us how we want to live.
A Textile With a Story
This is one of the reasons we're drawn to traditional textiles at Soumak Boutique.
Behind something as familiar as a towel can be centuries of craftsmanship, culture and everyday human life.
Our Turkish towels are handwoven in Türkiye from quality cotton and selected for their texture, versatility and designs. Some carry traditional motifs such as the Protection Eye, a symbol long associated with protection across Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cultures.
They are useful objects.
But they also carry a story.
And perhaps they can become part of your own rituals too.
A Small Invitation to Slow Down
You don't need an Ottoman hammam to create a moment of stillness.
Maybe tonight it's a warm shower.
Maybe it's tea with a friend.
Maybe it's leaving your phone in another room.
Maybe it's simply giving yourself permission to stop thinking about what comes next.
Sometimes a beautiful life is built through very ordinary moments, when we're present enough to notice them.
