Syrian Mosaic Handicrafts

The Damascene Mosaic Art, or the wood nut, which is the art of inlaying wood with mother-of-pearl, is one of the ancient professions for which the city of Damascus in Syria is still famous. The history of this handicraft goes back to more than 300 years. The mosaic industry reflects the introduction of mother-of-pearl into particles of different types of wood such as walnut, rose and beech. And it depends mainly on the craftsman’s imagination in inlaying wood and transforming it into artistic forms of drawings and geometric shapes such as octagon, square, hexagon and triangle, where the wood is spread into small ones that form in its composition a group of different types and colors of them in the form of slices that combine to form the desired shape.

An ancient handmade artistic craft of Damascene origins, the Damascene Ajami Art was inherited by artists through the ages and innovated in it. It was given this name because of the combination of decorations that were mixed in Persian, Turkish, Moroccan and Arab art, and what came from ancient Greek and Greek eras. It is a heritage art that was used to decorate the official reception halls and halls of old Damascene houses. The colors of Ajami painting retain their brilliance for many years. This profession crystallized during the era of the Umayyad dynasty and it was called botanical painting because its colors were extracted from plants.
